Renaturalization of the Este river
Returning the river to the people

The project's main objective is to rehabilitate the Este river (Rio Este) and requalify the waterline through the promotion of the riverside ecosystem. The intervention will apply nature-based solutions along with a strategy to transform the landscape into an important city landmark intended to promote the use of riverside spaces by the population.
To understand the river's complex dynamics, the city had to acquire in-depth scientific knowledge of its ecosystem. It did so in partnership with multiple support entities, namely:

  • the Portuguese Agency for the Environment, a national institute for environmental development,
  • the University of Minho, to test nature-based solutions in an urban laboratory setting,
  • the Rios Project, a program boosting social participation in the conservation of the river.

This  project has been integrated into Braga's sustainable urban rehabilitation strategy, climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy, and its sustainable mobility strategy.

"Global challenges led us to take steps to guarantee a sustainable and resilient city, under the risk of Braga losing its authentic character."
