Researcher, Memorial University - On the Move Partnership

Elise Thorburn is a researcher with Memorial University’s On the Move Partnership, a multi-sector research program examining employment-related geographical mobility in Canada and beyond. Her own work on this project involved interviewing workers and union leaders on the challenges low waged workers with extended commutes through the city face, especially those whose shift schedules are erratic, unpredictable, and often set by algorithm. She holds a PhD in Media and Information Studies from the University of Western Ontario and is the Principle Investigator on a SSHRC-funded project on the history and present of electronic monitoring technologies. Elise recently left full-time academic work to begin medical school (Class of 2022) where she hopes to put the knowledge she acquired through years of research and investigation into practice in her future work as a physician.
