Hugh is Director of Development at the University of California’s Center for Information Technology Research in the Interests of Society (CITRIS). Hugh leads the Center’s strategic engagement with corporate sponsors and manages research initiatives related to water and cities.

From 2008 – 2010, Hugh was Director of Business Relations at the University of Manchester and from 2006 – 2008 was Director of the Research & Enterprise Partnership between Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities. In both roles Hugh worked closely with government leaders at national, regional and local levels and with senior corporate executives.

From 2000 to 2006 Hugh was based at the University of Cambridge, as Director of Corporate Liaison and as a Director at the Cambridge-Massachusetts Institute of Technology Institute (CMI). For 4 years, from 1996 to 2000, Hugh worked for Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. Based in Bristol, UK and in Palo Alto, California, Hugh developed and managed the Laboratories’ key strategic relationships with major universities around the world.

Hugh has a Bachelors degree in Biology (Birmingham, UK), a PhD in Zoology (Bristol, UK) and was a NATO Research Fellow at Carleton and York Universities from 1984 to 1987. From 1987 to 1992 Hugh worked for Research Councils UK before becoming the research manager at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School.
