Montréal, Canada – June 21, 2016. NewCities today announced that the sixth edition of the New Cities Summit will take place in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea. The Summit has the full support of Incheon Metropolitan City and Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), who will see over 800 global urban leaders convene in Songdo International Business District for the leading event on urban innovation in June 2017. This also marks the first time a greenfield city will play host to the New Cities Summit, bringing new dynamism to the global event that has been hosted in Montréal, Jakarta, Dallas, São Paulo and Paris over the past five years.

The Summit will not only bring leading mayors, CEOs, urban planners, architects, designers and cultural leaders to Songdo, but will position Songdo globally as a vibrant city that is both inspiringly innovative and progressive.

Songdo is located in the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), a collection of three regions on the west coast of South Korea. The city was created to be a leading innovation centre and destination for commerce. A central hub of urban development in South Korea, Songdo is a connection point for many major Asian metropolitan regions and global businesses. The city is also one of the most sustainable urban developments around the globe with the highest concentration of LEED-certified projects.

Hosting the Summit in Songdo will strengthen the partnership between NewCities and the city and highlight the city’s leadership in innovative urban development.

John Rossant, Chairman, NewCities said: “Taking the New Cities Summit to Songdo, South Korea is an incredible opportunity for NewCities to continue to set the global agenda on urban innovation. Songdo is an exceptional new city that not only holds unlimited potential for innovation but is also already setting the standards on progressive urban development. Songdo will propel the New Cities Summit conversation to new heights.”

Lee Young-geun, Commissioner, Incheon Free Economic Zone said: “I am delighted to host the 2017 New Cities Summit in Incheon IFEZ Songdo. The Summit will provide a great opportunity to foster urban innovation and entrepreneurship as well as establish IFEZ Songdo as a platform for new businesses concerning innovative urban development.”
