Gothenburg, Sweden

Public Health

The goal of “The City Where We Read to Our Children” initiative is to encourage reading with and for children in order to foster early childhood literacy. By leveraging Gothenburg’s public services, the program aims to increase cognitive ability in children and to improve aspects of social and economic life and health in the city. For example, they provide packages of books to homes and offer reading sessions with librarians. This initiative is executed in collaboration with children’s centers, nurseries, schools, maternity and paediatric health centers and libraries.

"I hope that the initiative can be an inspiration for other cities around the world, so that even more children can achieve their full potential in education, work and well-being regardless of socio-economic, or other, backgrounds."

Nina Miskovsky, Deputy Mayor of The City of Gothenburg and The Chairman for the board of The Administration for Allocation of Social Welfare
