Dr. Peter Engelke is a Deputy Director and Senior Fellow within the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center on Strategy and Security. His diverse work portfolio at the Center’s Foresight, Strategy, and Risks Initiative spans global and regional futures, geopolitics and international affairs, innovation and technological disruption, climate change and natural resources, and global urbanization among other topics. Dr. Engelke has managed numerous projects on these subjects, resulting in a lengthy list of Atlantic Council publications. His work has appeared in the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The Hill, Nikkei Asian Review, The National Interest, Citiscope, Meeting of the Minds, the World Economic Forum’s Agenda platform, and other outlets. Dr. Engelke’s co-authored books include The Great Acceleration, a world history from 1945 to 2016, and Health and Community Design, a study of public health and urban form, penned while he was on the research faculty at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Engelke’s professional experience includes stints at other think tanks and foundations in Europe and the United States, including as an Executive-in-Residence at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy in Geneva, Switzerland, a Bosch Fellow with the Robert Bosch Foundation in Stuttgart, Germany, and a Visiting Fellow at the Stimson Center in Washington, DC. He holds a Ph.D. in history from Georgetown University and has master’s degrees from Georgetown’s Walsh School of Foreign Service, the University of Maryland, and Indiana University. While conducting his doctoral dissertation field research, Dr. Engelke attended Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany, through a DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) research grant. Dr. Engelke currently is an Adjunct Lecturer within Georgetown’s School of Continuing Studies.
