juin 29, 2020 — press-coverage (fr)

Representatives from over 100 cities and 50 countries to join NewCities and partners for three-day, all-virtual program on urban wellbeing.

Montréal, June 29, 2020 – NewCities, in partnership with the Ville de Montréal and Novo Nordisk, presents the Wellbeing Cities 2020 Forum. This international event brings together cities that invest in the wellbeing and quality of life of their citizens. A local and international community will meet on NewCities’ virtual platform to:

  • Present and discuss solutions to promote quality of life in cities around the world through panels, workshops, and networking sessions.
  • Celebrate the laureate cities of the Wellbeing Cities 2020 Award.

To meet the challenges of tomorrow, cities must make a commitment to improve public health, support local communities, encourage sustainable environments, and stimulate local economies. Furthermore, the global COVID-19 crisis has emphasized how important it is for urban planners and policymakers to consider the wellbeing of city dwellers.

The Wellbeing Cities 2020 Forum is designed to promote the revitalization of cities everywhere and focuses on cooperation and knowledge-sharing among cities around the world. The Forum’s wide-ranging program touches on issues ranging from Civic Engagement, Housing for Health, Climate Migration, Resilience in Cities, Urban Biodiversity, Smart Cities, Equity in New Mobility, and more. Full program.

The Forum will also be the opportunity to celebrate the laureates of the Wellbeing Cities Award on September 15, 2020. The Award creates a global platform for cities to share their experience and best practices, and inspire others to act on urban wellbeing.

Winning cities will be selected among twenty semi-finalists in the following categories:

  • Building a vibrant urban economy: Brno (Czech Republic), Curitiba (Brazil), Fortaleza (Brazil), and Lahore (Pakistan),
  • Integrating nature and biodiversity: Bordeaux (France), Braga (Portugal), Florence (Italy), Nottingham (United Kingdom),
  • Planning for better urban health: Adelaide (Australia), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Cape Town (South Africa), and Philadelphia (USA),
  • Prioritizing wellbeing: Curridabat (Costa Rica), Edinburgh (United Kingdom), Glasgow (United Kingdom), and Tirana (Albania).
  • Supporting cohesive communities: Brussels (Belgium), El Paso (USA), Ljubljana (Slovenia), and New York City (USA).

John Rossant, Founder and Chair of NewCities, highlights why it is crucial to build events like the Wellbeing Cities Forum: “NewCities believes that just as buildings, cars, and schools have enforceable and measurable standards, so should cities when it comes to wellbeing for urbanites. This second edition will increase the mandate for and recognize forward-thinking cities prioritizing wellbeing while bringing together key players to deliver concrete urban strategies.”

The Wellbeing Cities Forum benefits from the support of the Ville de Montréal and the Gouvernement du Québec, as part of the Metropolitan Initiative and Outreach Fund, administered by the Secretariat for the Metropolitan Region of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MAMH).
