Mayor of Grande Prairie
Bill Given is the Mayor of Grande Prairie, Alberta, a young and rapidly growing community of about 70,000 serving a trading area of just under 300,000. First elected in 2001, Mayor Given holds the distinction of being the youngest person ever elected to Grande Prairie’s City Council at the age of 24. After serving 3 terms as a Councillor, he became the youngest CEO in the city’s history when he was elected Mayor at the age of 33 in 2010.
In addition to his council duties, Mayor Given is currently a member of a number of provincial & national scope organizations in Alberta including:
- Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA)
- Alberta Municipal Services Corporation (AMSC)
- Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT), Civilian Advisory Committee
- Canadian Standards Association’s Strategic Steering Committee On Natural Resources, and the CSA’s Water Resources Task Force.
Mayor Given has previously served on the Alberta Health Minister’s Opioid Emergency Response Commission and the board of directors Aquatera Utilities Inc., a regional water and solid waste utility.
Mayor Given has a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia and a Certificate in Local Government Administration from the University of Alberta.
Bill is a proud Rotarian and a former Rotary Youth Exchange student. He and his wife Susan, have an 8 year-old daughter and a 6 year old son.
